Describing Urban Changes

Azerbaijan, 2008

Azerbaijan's economy is rapidly growing. The capital undergoes its second oil boom with dramatic consequences. Within an ASA scholarship Oriana Kraemer and Sebastian Burger documented Baku's rapid urban changes during three months in 2008.

Baku's current changes are especially grave: land prices rocket high and just between the years 2000 an 2008 about 800 new high-rise buildings were built. The new apartments are often vacant, not seldomly bought as mere investment. However Azerbaijan is rich in architectural heritage: Wilhelminian styled buildings, Boulevards and promenades form the cityscape and give Baku a European flair despite its oriental inner city centre. However in the course of rapid urban development a lot this cultural heritage originating around 1900 is about to be replaced.

The resulting book and our exhibition in the Kapellhaus Baku want to draw attention to Azerbaijan's architectural heritage and its inhabitants, representative for the globalised development of many former Eastern Bloc states. The project outcome aims at sensibilising the European and primarily Azeri audience for the responsibility in this development and increase more awareness in global interdependencies.

The resulting book contains 61 photographs and a text by Oriana Kraemer. It can be previewed and ordered here.
